I, Buddha, 2500 years ago often used to narrate a story.
Because everywhere I went, despite my reluctance and refusal to answer them, people
still asked me about God and religion. Now, I had refused to acknowledge the very
existence of God whom they wanted to know about. So, what could I say? Thus on
being asked time and again about the existence of God and religion, I used tell
them this story. And today, I will relate the same story to you too.
Once, an intelligent man learnt to speak the Lion’s
language from somewhere. Now, having learnt the language, he needed to speak with
the lions as well. So off to the jungle he went. He asked every lion he met –
Brother, what is your religion? Which God do you believe in? Now all these
words were new to the lions. So they could not answer. The man, who had gone to
research on the lion’s psychology and their life, was very disappointed... Because
until now, he had repeated his question to scores of lions, but none of them
were able to answer. In the end, losing his patience he asked a lion – Isn’t
there anyone amongst you who is intelligent and who can tell me about your
religion and God? The lion replied – No one among us will be able to tell you,
but you can go to our king. Perhaps he may be able to answer your queries.
The man saw a ray of hope. He went straight to the king
of the lions and repeated his question about God and religion. He also
expressed his surprise at the ignorance of the other lions. What weird lions
they are! They have no awareness about their God or religion.
Here, the king of the lions was truly wise. On hearing the
question and seeing his gestures, the king laughed loudly. And while laughing
he said – No lion gave you a reply because they have been taught only one thing,
and that is to save themselves from using their brains, using it only as much
as required at the given point in time. And in normal circumstances, we do not
feel the need to use our brains. We are content with the way nature has made
us. We lead a simple life and we are happy. This is why neither do we need
religion nor do we feel the need for a God. We have also heard that all the
animals are content with the way Nature has made them, except man. And our wise
ancestors have also said that it is because man is not content with himself
that is he feels the need for religion and God. Animals otherwise feel no need
to know anything about a religion or God.
But you humans use your brains unnecessarily. That is why
you are forced to lead such unnatural lives. And when you encounter sorrow
leading such unnatural lives, then you look for refuge. You create religion and
then seek God. With this you invite more worries. We can’t understand why you
don’t live a simple life as Nature deemed you should. Why do you unnecessarily
apply your brain and keep searching for religion and God? Whatever you say,
brother, we happy lions just don’t understand this point of yours. That is why
you see, you humans lock us up in cages and come to see us in zoo’s, come to
the jungle to see us behave in our natural habitat, but has any lion ever come
to see you humans in the city? We have no interest in animals such as you sorrowful
humans. In fact until, we are left with no option, we do not even like to hunt
humans. We are scared that the dead human brain may infect us with the spirits
of religion and God and turn our normal and natural lives unnatural. No, no.
Please spare us!
…What the lion said to the intelligent human, I am saying
the very same thing to you. Discuss everything but religion and God… your time and
mine…both are valuable.
