There was once a hardworking, noble
farmer. And he was so religious that he used to visit the temple twice a day!
But one day, a powerful moneylender of the village, cheated him of his land.
Now, he had a wife and two little children. So he could not even confront the
moneylender. That was the limit! The family was on the verge of starving to
death. Seeing no other option, he asked the temple priest to try and make the
moneylender see some sense. On hearing this request the priest promptly washed
his hands from the situation. He blatantly stated – this is a punishment for
your past-life karma, the Temple can’t get involved in the matter.
...On hearing this, the farmer was
very disappointed. Shocked, he even asked – then what’s the point of my daily
routine of visiting the temple twice a day to earn goodwill?!
The priest said – You will surely reap
the fruits of this goodwill in your next birth.
Getting a little agitated, the farmer
said – but today my family and I have come on the streets, what about that? My
wife and children are dying of hunger...what about that?
What could the priest say now? Accept
it as God’s justice...saying so he walked away. A few days later, one of his
friends advised the farmer to contact a social service organisation helped
secure justice for the poor people. It was a do or die situation! After the
bitter experience at the temple, he had no hopes left from anyone else. But he thought
to himself ‘what’s there to lose’ he paid a visit to the organisation. The head
of the organisation was left shell-shocked on hearing his plight. After a
nearly six-month long legal battle, that organisation got back the farmer his
land.
...As soon as he put the first step
on his land once again, the words that escaped his lips were – Oh Lord, your mysterious
ways never cease to amaze! You direct us towards the pundits but you actually
stay in the hearts of the ones who help the helpless!
