Lewis Carroll, was an English writer
and mathematician who is best remembered for his child-fiction Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland.
Born on 27th January,
1832, in the parsonage of Daresbury, England, he was named Charles Lutwidge
Dodgson. He was the third child and eldest son of eleven children of Frances
Jane Lutwidge and her husband Reverend Charles Dodgson. A noted expert in the
domains of logic, word play and fantasy, he created his pen name Lewis Carroll
from the anagram of his birth name Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
His poems like 'The Hunting Of the Snark' and 'Jabberwocky',
are considered to be one of the finest within the genre of ‘literary
nonsense’. Unlike most Victorian writers, his novels were a contrast to the
extremely moralistic children’s literature. If Victorian children’s literature
was all-protective and a fairy tale kind, it was Carroll’s work that broadened
our perspective towards literature for children. His works engage you,
challenge and please you, and finally leave your mind in awe.
An Oxford University gradute,
University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, Deacon in the Anglican Church, a
fine photographer and a colourful writer, the uber talented and multifaceted Lewis
Carroll died in the year 1898 at the age
of 66, leaving behind a marvellous world of imagination for children to
cherish!
On his birthday, let’s remember him
fondly and taking a leaf out his book, always strive to think out of the box!
