The Facede of Rites and Rituals

A man read a board outside a temple -
Get your anger treated permanently for Rs. 2100

The poor chap was extremely distressed by his short temper. He gave the pundit Rs. 2100 and started his treatment. But can one be relieved of anger by performing rites and rituals? After the rites were concluded he told the pundit, “you have finished performing the ritual, but it doesn’t seem as if my anger has reduced.” The pundit said, “the ritual was a success. As far as your anger is concerned… well! You anyway had it prior to the ritual.”

On hearing these words from the pundit, the man who anyway had a fierce temper, lost his cool. But somehow controlling his anger, he said to the Pundit, “Look! I paid you Rs. 2100 to get rid of my short temper.” The pundit said, “Yes, you did.” The man said, “but I’m still getting angry!” The pundit said, “Well, that has been happening to you right from the beginning. How are the rituals at fault for this?”

… Hearing such a vague reply, the man who was anyway angry, now turned furious! But it was a matter of Rs. 2100. So with great difficulty, he calmed himself down and said to the pundit, “Look! I wanted to be freed from my anger and that is why I had given you Rs. 2100. The pundit said, “Yes, you did. Fuming, the man said, “But I have not been rid of my anger!” The pundit said, “How can the rituals be of any help in it? Your hot-headedness was present even before the ritual began.”

…This was the limit! By now, the pundit was also harassed by his constant reasoning. So eventually, both came down to blows.
Such are the treatments provided at temples-mosques. Money goes down the drain and you return empty handed. It is common sense – can the illnesses of the mind ever be cured by rites and rituals?
